On Monday 18th March, inakustik will release a compilation of three rare and previously unreleased German concerts recorded and filmed in 1989, 1995 and 2000, from the Canadian blues rock guitarist, Jeff Healey.
Entitled "Jeff Healey - As The Years Go Passing By: Live in Germany 1989 - 1995 - 2000", the concerts will be released as a 3 CD-set, and as a Deluxe Edition 3CD + 2DVD. The latter includes an extensive booklet featuring contributions from the participating musicians, plus rare photos.
The three concerts include "Ohne Filer Extra" (May 10, 1989), "Extraspät in Concert"(April 2, 1995), and "Ohne Filter Extra" (October 31, 2000).
"With the fifth anniversary of Jeff's passing coming up on 2nd March 2013, we were looking for a special way to commemorate and help celebrate Jeff’s life and legacy,"says Jeff’s widow, Cristie Healey.
"In preparing for this release, it was important to include the participation of as many of the performers involved as possible. Jeff’s friends and colleagues have enthusiastically shared their memories of the concerts which help to make this rare live compilation extra special.”
"The Jeff Healey Estate is very proud to endorse this release. It's the first collection of archive material to be officially released with the approval of the Healey Family since Jeff left us all too soon. We are privileged to continue the legacy of his immense efforts, incredible talent and sheer love of music, for everyone to enjoy."
"Jeff’s life wasn’t just about music but rather, music was part of what brought life to Jeff. It was part of who he was. For those who knew him, this fact was always quite apparent, even up to his last live performance, only a month before he passed away. The live recordings were created with the participation of those who knew Jeff best, sharing his talent with his fans, friends, and fellow musicians for years to come."

DELUXE EDITION - Review This 3CD + 2DVD edition is very well packaged and contains all previously unreleased recordings. There is over three hours of video (200 mins) and audio (183 mins).
The three shows span over eleven years with only the songs "Confidence Man", "Angel Eyes", "Roadhouse Blues" and "See The Light" surviving to appear in all three sets. The only other track that appears more than once is "My Little Girl". These three concerts give fans an insightful look into the evolution of the outstanding guitarist Jeff Healey who was not a bad singer either.
The concerts are as they were performed without the aid of any studio overdubs.
Jeff was born in Toronto on March 25th, 1966 and was blind from early childhood due to a rare form of eye cancer. His excellent guitar playing and soulful voice saw him rise to prominence in the late 1980’s and ‘90’s selling millions of albums worldwide.
Due to his blindness he developed a unique style of playing, placing the guitar flat on his lap and playing it like a lap steel, putting his hands over the fret board, giving him the flexibility of fretting with all five fingers and the power of pulling notes with the strength of his whole hand.
In the DVD's you will be mesmerised when you see him playing guitar close up.
The great camera work shows Jeff's technique with close-ups of his guitar playing, something you would really not be able to see at his shows.
Cristie Healey, Jeff's widow, comments ...
"With the fifth anniversary of Jeff's passing coming up on 2nd March 2013, we were looking for a special way to commemorate and help celebrate Jeff’s life and legacy,"
Jeff's voice and guitar is superb at all three shows and his backing players give their all.
Best tracks from 1989 are "My Little Girl", "When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky" and "See The Light" although there is not one song I did not enjoy.
Likewise from 1995 the stand-out tracks are "Stop Breaking Down", "Me And My Crazy Self", "Angel Eyes", "Roadhouse Blues" and the sublime fifteen minute version of "See The Light".
The 2000 Ohne Filter performance highlights are "My Little Girl", "How Blue Can You Get", "Put The Shoe On The Other Foot" and "Roadhouse Blues". Jeff even had the wonderful guitarist PHILIP SAYCE in his band for this one.
Jeff Healey sadly passed away on March 2nd, 2008 from cancer at the age of only 41.
These recordings are a fitting tribute to a great guitarist (and singer); and if you have never heard any of Jeff's music is a great place to start. If you are a fan then is a must purchase.
An excellent box set!
Daisy’s Eye Cancer Fund is a research foundation dedicated to helping children with retinoblastoma, the form of eye cancer which took Jeff’s sight as an infant. This wonderful organization has affected real change through its research throughout the years and is near and very dear to the Healey family.
A new one-dollar short eBook tells the story – 25 years on – of the making of Van Halen’s 1988 album OU812.
Author Martin Popoff explains:
“It’s always a blast talking with Sammy Hagar, and within this lively read, he’s considerably charitable in giving me the story of this “hair metal”-era smash hit from the mighty Van Halen.”
In fact, Hagar waxes lyrical about the “magical moments on OU812. We could do no wrong. We just said, let’s start recording today. We just made a date. We had come off a very lengthy tour for 5150 and Eddie had a bunch of riffs he was jamming around. I had a bunch of lyrics in notebooks that I had been thinking about and writing. And we just put them together and jammed in the studio. It was just complete, simple, magic.”
Ye Olde Metal: Van Halen’s OU812 is available as a 10-page eBook in high-resolution PDF format from www.zunior.com
Also hot off the Popoff ePress are short eBooks in the Ye Olde Metal single-album series on the making of:
Y&T’s Earthshaker (1981)
“Y&T assumed a more moshing position, cranking a blistered blast of traditional metal for this first record for the band on A&M,” Popoff says.
Manowar’s Battle Hymns (1982)
“I’ve got vocalist Eric Adams telling, at length, the story of putting together Manowar’s trend-bucking debut record of might is right.”
Gamma’s Gamma 2 (1980)
“One of the gosh-darned coolest classic metal albums of all time. This long making of “essay” celebrates the record in considerable detail. Interview footage comes from vocalist Davey Pattison, bassist Glenn Letsch, and the dearly departed leader of the band, guitarist Ronnie Montrose.”
April Wine’s The Nature Of The Beast (1981)
Harder... Faster is my fave April Wine album, and I’ve written about that too, but The Nature Of The Beast is pretty cool as well, especially “Future Tense”... yeah! So here we are, chatting with guitarists Myles Goodwyn and Brian Greenway about April Wine’s most successful album in the states.”
Trouble’s Trouble (1990)
“Arguably the greatest doom album of all time – produced by Rick Rubin. What results is a huge slab of steaming apocalyptic riffery, and here’s the story of it.”

"A Clockwork Army" Track listing ...
01 C U Next Tuesday
“A clockwork army” provides the anthemic conclusion to the Black Marias’ energetic live set. This Peterborough band has an ability to pen thunderous sing-alongs. Despite the old school Oi & punk tunes, the band never lose their sense of melody and always let the choruses carry the songs. For instance, “Minority report”, a long-standing live favourite, has an instantly recognisable refrain. Dave’s soaring vocals rise above most singers, and it’s this asset that allows the Black Marias to make these memorable choruses so infectiously catchy. There is a wickedly un-pc sense of humour running rampantly through the songs. The music and vocals remind us somewhat of the 90′s band The Elite. Foldout cover with all lyrics and lots of photos. Only 300 copies pressed, these will probably go fast. Top release!!" - PURE IMPACT
"Marias’ new album runs like clockwork - A CLOCKWORK Army provides the anthemic conclusion to the Black Marias’ energetic live set. It also stands as the title track on the band’s long-awaited second album and is a testament to the Peterborough punks’ ability to pen thunderous sing-alongs while adhering fiercely to their DIY working class ethics. A call for unity among the many factions of punk, the closing track may be the one that’s lodged in your brain after repeated listens, but that doesn’t diminish the quality of its 11 bedfellows" - PAUL BENTON (Peterborough Evening Telegraph)
THE BLACK MARIAS are ...
Mitch - vocals
Jimmy - bass
Fill - guitar/vocals
Tom Spud Perry - guitar/vocals
Jools - drums

The album will be available as a regular CD, limited-edition vinyl and limited-edition hardcover book with a 28-page booklet containing ten regular songs and two bonus tracks ("The Cross And You", "Death Is Just A Feeling").

Tobias commented ...
"It is a great honour for me to have Rodney create the artwork of 'The Mystery Of Time'.
"Since the new album is a conceptual album and its story has a magical and enchanting atmosphere, there was no other painter I could think of to create the artwork. "I've had several creative conversations with Rodney during the process and I had the feeling that the concept was inspiring to him right from the start. "I put a lot of energy into producing a very detailed and fascinating album, and Rodney had that same enthusiasm to create an artwork just as detailed and fascinating. "This is a new chapter in Avantasia's history and I think it didn't deserve less than a magical painting by my favorite painter and childhood hero: The one and only Rodney Matthews!"
